Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo is one of many Mexican holidays that strengthens and solidifies Hispanic tradition year after year. The Cinco de Mayo tradition follows that the Cinco de Mayo festival celebrates the "Batalla de Puebla" or Battle of Puebla which occurred under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza on May 5, 1862. Puebla was a small underdog of a town that overcame the French forces who were attempting to occupy Mexico City and infiltrate Mexican politics and culture. Thanks to the town's efforts, Mexican nationalism soared and still soars today on this widely celebrated Hispanic holiday. Any classic Cinco de Mayo party or Cinco de Mayo celebration includes Cinco de Mayo food, such as atole (porridge), tortillas, tamales (filled pastries) and sopas (soups). Cinco de Mayo crafts, Cinco de Mayo activity and a slew of Cinco de Mayo costumes and Cinco de Mayo games finish off the Hispanic holiday of Cinco de Mayo in true Mexican style!
